In the movies, after someone passes away, you will often see the family gathered around the lawyer’s desk for a reading of the will. But much like the outbursts in courtroom dramas, this is a movie fiction. In real life, there is no obligation for the executor to arrange for a reading of the will, and this rarely if ever happens. However, if you are an executor, you do have obligations to share some information with beneficiaries. It is often wise to also communicate with those who are not named beneficiaries, but may have expectations of inheriting. Trouble arises when someone thinks they are being treated unfairly or left in the dark about a family member’s estate. If you have questions about your rights and obligations as executor or beneficiary, call our office for an appointment today.
